Christmas Cookies – Day 17

Mincemeat Twists

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 cup butter, cut in 6 or 7 pieces
5 to 7 Tablespoons cold water
2/3 cup prepared mincemeat
2 teaspoons finely shredded orange zest

In food processor, pulse together the flour, brown sugar, nutmeg and baking powder. Sprinkle pieces of butter over surface, and pulse a few times until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle 5 Tablespoons of water over the surface, and pulse 2 times. Disconnect the electricity to the processor, open the lid and stir the mixture with a fork, till all is moistened. If necessary add more water, one Tablespoon at a time. Form dough into a ball. Cover with plastic wrap. Chill for 1 hour.
Combine mincemeat and orange peel in a small bowl and set aside.
Divide dough into quarters. Roll each into 12X4 rectangles. Spread the mincemeat mixture on two of the rectangles, and cover with the remaining two. Trim the edges.
Cut each rectangle into 12 4X1 inch strips. Twist each strip twice and place on ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes
Brush with milk and sprinkle with sugar. Bake for 5 to 7 minutes more, until golden. Cool on wire rack. Makes 24 cookies.
