Basic Icebox Cookie Dough to be sliced and baked
1 Cup Butter, softened
1 1/2 Cup Sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/2 Cups all-purpose flour

Cream butter in mixer until soft. Add sugar and beat until combined. Add baking powder and salt. Beat in egg and vanilla. Add as much of the flour as you can with the mixer and stir the rest in by hand.
Divide dough into portions and tint different colors.
For a spiral – Divide dough in half. Either tint 2 different colors, or leave one plain. Roll each portion to about 1/8 inch. Stack the two portions, and roll tightly together. It helps to keep the dough chilled. Wrap in plastic wrap and freeze 1 to 2 hours or refrigerate overnight until firm enough to slice.
Slice 1/4 inch thick. Place on ungreased sheet or parchment lined cookie sheet. Bake at 375 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. Let cool on cookie sheet for 1 minute before removing to cooling rack.
